Beta reading is a crucial step in the publication process. You need to know what readers think of your book before you publish the book yourself or send it to any potential publishers. Beta readers can help you uncover inconsistencies you’ve missed, let you know their true feelings about your characters, and so much more. To give your book the best chance possible, you’ll want to hire a professional beta reader (like me!) to address:
Plot holes
Character development
Timeline
Genre matching
Inconsistencies
Specific areas you’re worried about
I’ve beta read over 30 titles just in the last few months and it was my job for over six years to evaluate manuscripts for the publication company I worked for. My expertise lies in young adult fiction (all genres) and adult romance. If you have a book that falls into either of those categories, I’d love to work with you!
You will receive:
A PDF editorial analysis of your work including what’s working in the book and what needs some improvement
Comments throughout the manuscript in track changes
If you have a beta reading questionnaire, worksheet, or any additional resources you’d like me to fill out, I am more than happy to do that as well.
My turnaround time is one week for books under 50,000 words and two weeks for 50,000 to 150,000 words. If you have a book that is longer than 150,000 words, please email me at hello@thereadingchamber.com.
Once booked, please email your manuscript as an attached Word document or a Google Doc link. Your copyright is of course protected, but I am more than happy to sign an NDA if you prefer. I will reply via email and get started on your beta reading right away!
Developmental editing is a more intensive edit than copyediting and it is highly needed for fiction books. Similar to beta reading, developmental editing looks at the overall plot of the book as well as character development, timeline, etc. However, I do a deeper dive into each chapter to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and how you should fix it. This includes:
Pacing
Narrative voice
Areas that need expansion or condensing
Story flow
And of course, plot holes, character development, timeline, genre matching, inconsistencies, and specific areas you’re worried about.
I developmental edit young adult fiction (all genres except horror) and adult romance books. I do not do the final copyediting/proofreading, which comes after developmental editing. Please note, I accept two bookings at a time for this level. If you are unable to book, please email me at hello@thereadingchamber.com to get on a wait list.
The process:
Comments are made in track changes of a manuscript with a PDF editorial analysis of the book for your review
Once you review the editorial analysis and my comments, we’ll have a discussion (via email, phone, or zoom) about the manuscript and any editorial suggestions
You will then implement any editorial changes into the manuscript and I will do a final review of the book with a second editorial analysis to provide final thoughts.
Pricing structure:
$750 due at booking
$750 due upon delivery of first editorial analysis (usually two to three weeks after receipt of manuscript)
Once booked, please email me your manuscript as an attached Word document or Google Doc link. Your copyright is of course protected, but I am more than happy to sign an NDA if you prefer. I will reply via email and set-up the process.
Please review the developmental editing description to the left. This listing is if you have a book that is over 75,000 words. I do not accept manuscripts that are over 150,000 words.
